Rich Academic Offerings

The biggest per capita performing arts experience with Choir, Orchestra, Band, Speech (2nd largest in the state), Debate, Guitar class, Music production class (digital music), Music workshop, Perennial Award-winning Jazz band and choir ensembles, and the only school in the area annually recognized for IA music theatre Awards for its theatre musicals.

Unique experiences for students in the Metro Area such as: Overnight leadership retreat, Poetry Slam and Spoken Word Competition (PAM SLAM), Student-Led Battle of the Bands competition that raise awareness about social justice (Jamnesty), Touring and Performing Improv Team (FDIC), Warriors on Broadway, and Committee WHS: the only metro student feedback group open to all students to improve things for student life in the school.

"As both a mom and the Mayor of Cedar Rapids, I’m incredibly grateful for what Cedar Rapids Washington High School gave my daughters. In addition to an outstanding education, it gave them a place where they were truly known, challenged, and celebrated for exactly who they are. Their teachers recognized their potential, treated them with respect and maturity, and held them to high expectations while meeting them where they were.  They were able to lead as captains of athletic teams, perform in an award-winning show choir, and take advantage of countless opportunities that helped shape their confidence and character.

What I’m most grateful for is the culture. Washington celebrated differences. My daughters learned alongside classmates from many backgrounds and experiences, and those relationships helped them become compassionate, confident adults who value people for who they are. I truly believe they are the women they are today because of the education, opportunities, and community they found at Washington High School."

"Washington High School helped prepare me for life by giving me space to discover who I was becoming. It was where I learned that discipline, creativity, leadership, and community all matter. So much of what I do now as a dancer, choreographer, massage therapist, yoga teacher, business owner, and community leader traces back to the confidence and foundation I built at Wash, specially in the fine arts wing. It taught me to show up, work hard, stay curious, and use my gifts in service of something bigger than myself."

"Washington High School is and always will be, a very special place for me. The memories and relationships I built over my four years there have directly contributed to the success I’ve experienced today. 

What makes Wash different isn’t just the students I graduated alongside, but also the coaches and teachers who pushed me every day academically. And athletically, to become a little better than I was the day before. They truly care about their students and are genuinely invested in their students’ futures. I can remember countless timeless going to my teachers and coaches not only for help with homework, but also for letters of recommendation, or even, life advice. They were always willing to support me both inside and outside the classroom. Because of the foundation they gave me I felt confident ad prepared to take on the challenges of both college and the military. If you’re willing to put in the hard work, the teachers and the coaches at Wash will be right there with you every step of the way. 

Washington High School is not your cookie-cutter high school. It’s a place that challenges you, supports you, and prepares you for whatever comes next.  I'll always be grateful to be a part of the Wash family.
